History of WMCR
WMCR was originally based on the 3rd floor of Wallace Hall until they moved to the basement of the Stockdale Center in 2004. Prior to the move, the studio was cramped, tiny, and unprofessional. The move to the Stockdale Center provided a full studio in the basement of the Student Center, bringing WMCR one step closer to the student populous.
Unfortunately, a flood in the building ruined the soundboards, some vinyl records, and other essential equipment. WMCR then purchased a new board, and got numerous donations of music, which now makes up the expansive library of the radio station.
Also in 2004, WMCR underwent new management with the addition of advisor Chris Goble. Goble’s first act as advisor was to purchase a subscription to College Music Journal (CMJ). In doing so, monthly CDs of up and coming artists were sent to the station. Goble realized the potential of buying these rights to music and purchased the Jones Music Library rights, a collection of over 300 CDs of numerous genres, edited for radio play. His acts of purchasing distribution rights took WMCR one step closer towards becoming a real radio station.
In the near future, Goble and the WMCR Executive Staff are exploring more ways to get their message spread. Currently, the station is not FCC regulated, and has a minimal broadcast potential of approximately 25 feet. However Goble’s expansions have granted the station a link to listen online. He hopes to incorporate podcasting into the WMCR website with the podcasts also available for download on iTunes for no charge. In doing so, Goble hopes to achieve a more expansive potential message for the station, enhancing the reality of working in a real radio station.
