Raising Admission Standards at Private Colleges: A Toulmin Brief
Toulmin Debate Brief
CATA 335: Argumentation
Raising_Admission_Standards_Brief.pdf

By taking Argumentation, I discovered a wealth of knowledge pertaining to building solid, logical, persuasive cases. Although I had been framing persuasive arguments all my life, I had no idea (until this course) the amount of communication theory that could be applied to arguments. Fortunately, my partner and I were able to take the concepts we had learned in the course and use it to construct a policy case at the tail end of the semester. The Toulmin brief submitted here outlines the logical progression of our arguments in the case.

I strongly feel that this brief (representing the affirmative team's speakers) is a fine demonstration of my ability to apply communication principles to practical issues; in this case, the issue is the constructing of a policy case. My partner and I connected grounds to our claims with sound warrants. We established a prima facie case by presenting arguments for each of the required steps (problem, plan, workability, and solvency) and refuted the claims of the negative team. Furthermore, we used scholarly sources to support our claims and boost our credibility. In all of these ways we specifically applied communication theory to the constructing of our case, and it paid off in the form of a debate victory.
