Media Literacy: A Critical Evaluation of Entertainment News

This PowerPoint presentation was the result of a group project assigned in my Mass Media & Modern Society course. The object of the project was to critically evaluate and compare two news presentations. While other groups compared television news programs or national newspapers, my group was assigned the task of analyzing Inside Edition and Entertainment Tonight. This set of slides represents the panel presentation we gave the class to report our findings.
Even though the programs we were assigned were entertainment news programs, we decided to judge them based on regular reporting standards. We reviewed the sources cited in each show to determine their overall quality and credibility. We found their reporting styles to be similar and noticed a similar use of flashy editing techniques and themed music. Furthermore we discussed the shows' biases and headline decisions. I feel that this is a quality report because we were able to apply our knowledge of specific, professional journalism standards to differing communication situations. Furthermore, we were able to judge how each show fulfilled the expectations of a television-mediated message
