The Rhetoric: Public Speaking Essentials
Topical Application Paper
CATA 230: Introduction to Communication Studies
The_Rhetoric.pdf

This application paper, from my Introduction to Communication Studies course, was assigned to help me internalize and apply the concepts taught by Aristotle in The Rhetoric. I begin by outlining the basic concepts of logos, pathos, and ethos and continue by arguing that these guidelines direct every modern speaking situation.

I believe that this paper reflects my understanding of quite a few principles of communication theory. My explanation of logos describes the importance of using research to aid the practice of communication. After all, in order for an audience to be properly persuaded, a speaker's claims must be backed up by logical proofs. Secondly, I feel that my section on ethos shows how ethical considerations can influence communication. The audience will not be persuaded if it perceives the speaker as a hypocrite or as acting without the audience's best interests in mind. I also believe that my discussion of pathos establishes the fact that individuals will react differently to a message based on their perception of the argument's emotional pleas. Furthermore, I address how an audience member's elaboration of a message (according to the Elaboration Likelihood Model) can determine his or her response.

Being an application paper, this piece was never meant to be research-laden, but even despite its small scope it demonstrates my understanding of a wide range of communication topics.
