CATA 261: Mass Media & Modern Society
Newspaper_Quiz.pdf

In order to accurately understand modern media one must have a firm understanding of its history and development. During the fall of 2007 I was privileged to take the course Mass Media & Modern Society with Professor Joseph Angotti, former executive producer of NBC Nightly News with David Brinkley and John Chancellor. It was in this class that I learned about the evolution of our American media and its influence on contemporary communication.

The quiz offered here showcases my understanding of the history and development of media by focusing on the beginnings of modern newspapers. It demonstrates that I understand how the working class made the penny press possible, fueling circulation and leading to great names like Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst, and Horace Greeley. I was able to correctly answer questions regarding current events and famous news events of the twentieth century. While this quiz certainly is not comprehensive, I believe it stands as a snapshot of my knowledge of the field of communication and media. In the same way that I have a grasp on the roots of newspapers, I know about the television, magazine, Internet, motion picture, and recording industries.
