WMCR: The Sound of Monmouth Website CATA 365: Media Production http://www.nickcarlson.net/wmcr_website/index.htm
I collaborated with three other Monmouth College students to produce this website for WMCR, the college's student-run radio station. Our main goal was twofold: to attract new listeners to the station and inform current listeners. The site's overall look and feel (as suggested by the art and message content) reflects our decision to primarily target college-age users while keeping the site accessible to faculty, alumni, and the general public.
The quality of the site attests to my ability to create a professional-grade mediated message. The message content is concise and easily scanned by the average user. All of the writing on the site has been edited to read as one voice. The menu items are clear and address all major areas that a radio station's website should include. Furthermore, the art is clean and unobtrusive; with the exception of the pages created by individual DJs, the site's style is consistent across all of the pages.
While working on this project, an assignment for my Media Production course, I found myself utilizing quite a few skills that I had learned in other communication-related courses. In this manner the site is also the culmination of a variety of communication abilities. For example, I had to listen to other members of my group, play an active part in the group decision-making process, and help outline the structure of the site. I was also in charge of art direction, which required me to critically analyze the messages being sent by my visual choices.
The success of this project is seen in that our professor not only gave the site a high grade but chose to display it on his website as model to future Media Production classes.
