Raising Admission Standards at Private Colleges
Debate Outline
CATA 335: Argumentation
Raising_Admission_Standards.pdf

The artifact presented here outlines the arguments I presented as part of a policy debate held in my Argumentation class. As part of the affirmative team, I resolved that "four-year, baccalaureate colleges should raise admissions standards." The main objective for my partner and I was to present a prima facie case in favor of raising academic standards for four-year college admissions. We successfully presented a problem, outlined a plan to correct the problem, demonstrated the workability of that plan, and accounted for solvency issues.

I consider this piece to be a demonstration of skillful oral communication for a few reasons. As far as delivery is concerned, I was able to explain my arguments in a clear manner while fitting my vocal inflection and volume to the context. My professor (Dr. Lee McGaan) noted on my evaluation that I had "very nice, fluent delivery." As far as the construction of the case, the outline shows that we were able to employ a variety of types of arguments in the section dealing with the inadequacies of the status quo (i.e. significant harms, greater goods, and goal failures). Furthermore, we were not only able to construct a strong affirmative position, but we were also capable of finding the weaknesses in the opposition's argument. My team won the debate and earned a high score on the evaluation. Our success was certainly the result of our combined competencies in case construction and skillful debating.
