Changing the World: One Child at a Time

CATA 233: Advanced Public Speaking

In October of 2005 I presented this speech to my Advanced Public Speaking course. I argued that, since World Vision (a non-governmental relief organization) can help bring an end to the cycle of hunger and poverty that plagues millions of children, we as individuals should contribute to such a worthy cause. By presenting evidence I compiled from 12 different sources I was able to illustrate the devastating effect that hunger and poverty have on third world countries. I also explained how World Vision was combating the causes of hunger and poverty and gave examples of its successes.

From a delivery standpoint, I chose to capitalize on the gravity of the situation. I began the speech by snapping my fingers every five seconds. As the audience calmed down and focused its attention on the harsh sound of my fingers breaking the silence of the room, I explained that the life of a child is lost every five seconds due to widespread hunger and malnutrition. At this point, the audience was committed to the speech, and I was free to present my case. In the PowerPoint presentation I made sure to highlight striking statistics and quantify them in ways that would pertain to a college student's economy of value. I attempted to look each member of the audience in the eyes at least once during the speech to personalize the message for each. Perhaps the most dramatic portion of the delivery came at the conclusion. While I pleaded with the audience to sponsor a child, an unsponsored child's profile displayed upon the screen, changing every five seconds to the sound of my fingers snapping.
