Rwanda: The Evolution of Genocide
Researh Paper

Rwanda_The_Evolution_of_Genocide.pdf

Originally written for a course centered on comparing sociological issues across political lines, this research paper constitutes some of my best work. The task at hand was to pick a cultural event that occurred in recent history and sufficiently summarize and analyze its effects, both locally and globally. I chose to tackle the genocidal events that occurred in Rwanda in the late spring of 1994. I was very pleased with the outcome of my efforts.

I consider this to be one the best pieces I have written for a variety of reasons. First, it incorporates cultural, social, and historical contexts that are key to understanding the events of 1994. I tried to present the genocide not as an isolated event, but as the result of an array of issues. Secondly, the structure of the paper follows a logical, chronological format. I chose to focus on the regional history that prompted the events, then I moved on to describing the actual events, and finally I provided an analysis of the episode. Also, it is a particularly impressive piece because I was able to maintain a professional-scale vocabulary while simultaneously weaving the paper together with striking prose. The selections that appear as direct quotes paint vivid pictures of the atrocity.

In addition, this paper was presented with the 2006-2007 1st Place Waid Prize for Research Writing in Comparative Societies by Monmouth College.
