CATA 230: Introduction to Communication Studies

Semiotic theory can be loosely defined as the interaction of signs (that is communication symbols) and society. Semiotic codes, then, are the ways in which we interpret communication. In this paper, I discuss in depth the role of semiotic codes, demonstrating their centrality to semiotic theory and showing their relationship to the theory of semiotics as a whole. Through this explanation I make readers more aware of their daily use of semiotic codes as well as the history of these constructs.

Although I give a brief introduction to semiotic theory, the main body of the paper is geared toward communication researchers. Keeping this audience in mind, I maintain an extended vocabulary of theory-specific terms throughout the report and strive to discuss concepts characteristic of college- or graduate-level research. The research content for this piece is particularly solid because of its foundation on a variety of credible, professional, and timely sources acquired through modern communication journals, scholarly article databases, and books. Overall, the paper stands as a whole, combining background on the theory, study of specific aspects of the theory, and practical application of the theory.
